What is Conflict?

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. In addition to this, each person has a variety of rights, including the right to freedom of speech.

The infringement on our rights and opinions are one of the reasons why we have conflict in our world today. In fact, conflict has become a part of our society based on this very fact.

Conflict is simply defined as a clash of interest.

Conflict may also be defined as a visible disagreement between two or more persons with regards to their opinions, beliefs and principle.

Please read on conflict management and ways to reduce conflict in organizations here.

Causes of Conflicts

There are many causes of conflict. As an instance, silence may actually result into conflict. Interestingly, silence can also be a great means of conflict prevention.

Please read on the consequences and solutions to conflict here.

Below are some of the causes of conflicts:

1. Frustration

When one is frustrated, he or she is made to feel annoyed and impatient because they cannot do or get what they wish. As a result, they become irritable and are more likely create conflicts.

Note: If such frustration had occurred in a group, such person may intend to harm the group by bringing about conflict within it.

Please read on the leadership qualities of Joseph on those who betrayed him.

2. Misunderstandings

Conflict will likely arise when people have different views or opinions on how things ought to be done.

As an instance, if the leaders of a group choose to maximize their powers by taking decisions outside the guide of their constitution, certain members of this group may rise to oppose the actions of such leaders; and this could result into conflict.

You can read on constitution here.

3. Difference in beliefs and values

We may have seen or heard about various clashes within a country or state, especially those having more than one ethnic group.

Also, religious conflicts and crises can emanate from the different beliefs of people. As an instance, the so-called boko haram group in Nigeria have been a major source of conflict for many reasons; one of which is their "zero or no value priority" on western education.

Please read on the consequences and solutions to illiteracy here.

You can read on pressure groups in Nigeria and their characteristics here.

4. Poor communication

At every point in a communication, it is expected that one of the parties will have to be the speaker while the other, the listener.

In a communication where no one is willing to be the listener, noise and conflicts are bound to arise.

Please read on cooperation here.

5. Respect of opinion

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and that must be respected, whether we agree with them or not.

Some people will rather attempt to force their opinion on others which will sometimes result into conflict.

We should understand that everyone has the right to accept our opinion or not to.

Please read more on fundamental human rights here.

6. Interest

In a family where the need of one person is frequently placed over another, a conflict of interest may arise.

As an instance, if the wife constantly puts priority on the needs of the children before that of her husband; then, there is a likelihood of conflict in such homes.

Please read on failed marriages and factors that lead it here.

7. Leadership

We cannot have two captains in a ship at the same time.

In the 2019 gubernatorial election held in Nigeria, a major political party whom was among the favorite to win in one of the Nigerian states ended up being disqualified because they could not provide a governorship candidate for their party.

This above turnout of event happened because the party had a leadership conflict within its inner caucus.

Please read on democracy and its characteristics here.

8. Personality

Personality conflict results when we have persons with similar personality working together. For instance, when we have two persons with pride working together; personality conflict may likely result.

Similarly, when we have two talkative in the same office, none may be willing to listen, giving rise to conflict.

You can read on the early years of Jesus here.

9. Cheating in a relationship

In any relationship where one of the partners cheat on the other, conflict is bound to happen whenever the cheating partner gets caught.

You can read on the various forms of marriage here.

10. Vices

Vices in this case means evil, bad and negative behavior.

One fact about life is: 'everyone likes to be treated in a good way'. Sometimes people may even fight for others based on how badly they have been treated.

Examples of vices are hate, envy, stealing, pride, covetousness, slot and so on.

Note: Evil brings about chaos and conflict.

Notable points in Social Studies

Social Studies is defined as an integrated study on the interaction of human beings with their physical and social environments.

We can think of our environment as everything that surrounds us at any point in time. For instance, the soil, air, your clothes, phone and everything surrounding you right now are all part of your environment. (That is, they make up your environment).

Physical environment describes every visible thing around us. It could be water, air, soil, clothes, phones or all other things found around us.

Social environment on the other hand describes the various social roles or positions that influence an individual or a group. It is represented in our culture, norms, values, the people and various institutions with whom we interact with. Meanwhile, understand that social media applications like facebook, twitter, instagram, youtube and the likes present a social environment where people can interact with one another regardless their geographical location around the world.
