Consequences of Adam and Eve's Disobedience:

According to christian scholars, 'obedience is the first law in heaven'. Obedience can only be possible or realized where there is a command or law.

When God created Adam and Eve, He placed them in the garden of Eden where they were in complete control of everything present therein. God’s first command to man came into place in Genesis 3:15-17.

  • Then the LORD GOD placed man in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and guard it. He said to him, 'You may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden, except the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad. You must not eat the fruit of that tree; if you do, you will die the same day.'

Although the bible did not record the presence of the woman (Eve) when God gave the above command to man (Adam); however, Adam must have told her about God’s command. Eve proved she was aware of this command in Genesis 3:2-3.

  • We may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden, 'the woman answered, except the tree in the middle of it. God told us not to eat the fruit of that tree or even touch it; if we do, we will die.'


Eventually, Adam and Eve disobeyed God in Genesis 3:6-7.

  • The woman saw how beautiful the tree was and how good its fruit would be to eat, and she thought how wonderful it would be to become wise. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, and he also ate it. As soon as they had eaten it, they were given understanding and realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and covered themselves.


From the above passages, we can now be certain that Adam and Eve disobeyed God.

Below are 8 Consequences of Adam and Eve’s Disobedience

 

  1. All God’s creature became guilty of original sin

The only two persons born of a woman; who broke this rule were Jesus and his mother Mary.

Although it was not recorded in the bible that Mary was conceived without original sin; this still remain the belief of some christian scholars.

Note: Original sin is not a sin committed by us. This sin is not a function of our actions; rather it is a function of the disobedience of Adam and Eve.

Every human being born of a woman automatically inherits original sin. This implies that every child is guilty of original sin; even right in the womb of their mother.

The good news is: 'This inherited sin (original sin) can be forgiven via only one way; and that’s baptism'.

To become free of original sin, every person needs to be baptized of water; in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Although Jesus had no stain of original sin, he fulfilled all righteousness by practically undergoing baptism in order to emphasize its importance.

  • At that time Jesus arrived from Galilee and came to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. But John tried to make him change his mind. 'I ought to be baptized by you, John said; and yet you have come to me!' But Jesus answered him; 'Let it be so for now. For in this way we shall do all that God requires.' So John agreed. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came up out of the water. The heaven was opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and alighting on him.

  1. Human perfection was lost

Before Adam and Eve sinned, they were such a perfect creature that God walked in their environment (the garden of Eden).

They were so perfect and innocent that they didn't even realize that they were naked. Their perfection also made them worthy of God’s garden.

As soon as they disobeyed God, they lost their perfection, realized that they were naked and were eventually driven out of the garden.

  • So the LORD God sent him out of the Garden of Eden and made him cultivate the soil from which he had been formed.

  1. God’s judgment was pronounced on the snake, woman and man

This is recorded in the Genesis 3:14-20:

  • Then the Lord said to the snake, 'You will be punished for this; you alone of all animals must bear this curse: from now on you will crawl on your belly, and you will have to eat dust as long as you live'.

  • And He said to the woman, 'I will increase your trouble in pregnancy and your pain in giving birth. In spite of this, you will still have desire for your husband, yet you will be subject to him.'

  • And He said to the man, 'You listened to your wife and ate the fruit which I told you not to eat. Because of what you have done, the ground will be under a curse. You will have to work hard all your life to make it produce enough food for you. It will produce weeds and thorns, and you will have to eat wild plants.'

  1. Chaos and disorderliness came upon earth

Before Adam and Eve disobeyed God, there was orderliness in the Garden of Eden. In fact, God himself walked in the garden (Genesis 3:8). Also, God had commanded that the beasts of the earth, all the birds in the sky, all the creatures that move along the ground and everything that has the breath of life should eat green plant for food and so it was.

  • And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground and everything that has the breath of life in it, I give every green plant for food. And it was so.

    Genesis 1:30


However, after Adam and Eve committed the sin of disobedience, orderliness was lost and chaos was introduced. The effects of Adam's and Eve's sin was further reflected in the behavioural and eating patterns of animals. To this end, certain animals morphed into carnivores (that is: flesh eating animals) and thus do not eat green plants. Examples are lions, tigers, snakes and so on.

Interestingly, it is noteworthy to state that this initial orderliness and balance in the Garden of Eden (before Adam and Eve sinned) will once again be restored. This was a prophesy made by prophet Isaiah. It is stated below:

  • The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. The infant will play near the hole of the cobra, and the young child put his hand into the viper's nest. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

Notable points in CRS

The parable of the prodigal son as narrated by Jesus himself is one that shows God's incomprehensible mercy and love. This parable is present in the gospel of Luke 15: 11-32.

Jesus began by saying:

There was once a man who had two sons. The younger one said to him, 'Father, give me my share of the property now'. So the man divided his properties between his two sons.

Luke 15: 11-12

From the above passage, it is quite clear that the younger brother had lost interest in the family's affairs. He must have pondered in his heart the sweetness of complete independence on a life of financial abundance.

To actualize his thoughts, he had the effrontery to go to his father to request for his inheritance even though his father is fully alive and active.

Adam and Eve disobeyed God while in the Garden of Eden. Below are the consequences of Adam and Eve's disobedience:

  • All God's creature became guilty of original sin.

  • Human perfection was lost.

  • God's judgement was pronounced on the snake, woman and man.

  • Chaos and disorderliness came upon earth.

  • Suffering, pain and death was introduced into the world.

  • The first prophesy was made. 

  • Clothing was made.

  • Paradise was temporarily lost.

Wise men from the east came to visit the infant king. Upon their arrival, they saw the child with his mother Mary. They knelt down and worshiped the infant (Jesus).

Notice that the bible recorded that the wise men knelt down and worshipped the infant (Jesus), according to Matthew 2:11.

Only God can be worshiped. Jesus is always God, even as a baby.

It is important to state that Jesus remained God at every point in his physical existence, even when he was in the womb of the virgin; throughout his life on earth, death on the cross and eventual resurrection.

The wise men from the east opened their treasures and presented the infant Jesus with three significant gifts. These are gold, frankincense and myrrh.

  • Gold represents a symbol of Jesus' kingship. Jesus is the King of kings, even at birth and throughout eternity.

  • Frankincense represents a symbol of Jesus' divinity and a sign of worship. Only God can be worshipped; and as such, Jesus is fully God.

  • Myrrh represents a symbol of Jesus' death. Jesus is truly man, and this is why he was able to suffer and die on the cross.

God created human beings for the following reasons:

  3. To serve Him

  4. To be happy with Him forever

Our first parent, Adam and Eve enjoyed a life of complete happiness before they committed sin. They never knew what pain nor sorrow was until they disobeyed God. In short, both were perfect beings until they committed the sin of disobedience against God.

Disobedience may simple be defined as the failure to obey rules, command or someone in authority.

Adam and Eve were the first human beings to disobey God.
