Peer pressure may be defined as a process whereby members of similar age or group influences one another towards acting in a way or manner typically different from their line of thought. In this regard, peer pressure influences how a person, thinks, act, and behave over a period of time.
As an instance, a young boy may be pressured by his peers into taking alcohol or drugs against his desire.
You can think of the term 'peer' as an individual within a group of people sharing a similar age, social position, class, or having the similar abilities as other people in that group.
Meanwhile, understand that peer pressure is often seen in children, teenagers, youths and adults respectively.
Certain stressors like frustrations, failures, disappointment, heartbreaks, loss of loved ones, low self-esteem, and diseases can stimulate a person to become pressured by his or her peers.
However, it is noteworthy to state that peer pressure isn't always negative. In fact, there are lots of positive peer pressure out there, and these have transformed the lives of many.

From the above paragraph, we can categorically state that peer pressure are of two types. These are:
Positive peer pressure
Negative peer pressure
With regards to positive peer pressure, an individual is influenced by his or her friends to achieve greater heights. Such influence my come in the form of physical, moral, emotional and financial support respectively.
When a student of a particular school is encouraged and supported by her classmates and colleagues towards greatness in a national academic competition, then such is a function of positive peer pressure.

Other examples of positive peer pressure include:
Encouraging classmates to study harder in their academics.
Returning lost money to appropriate authority.
Advising friends to become prudent with their money, rather than showcasing an extravagant lifestyle.
Reporting bad behavior to constituted authority, rather that accepting bribe to condone it.
Concerning negative peer pressure, an individual is influenced to showcase various negative values such as stealing, lying, fighting, bullying and so on.
If a student becomes a part of bad gangs in school, for instance, cultism; such student will likely participate in the cult activities such as fighting, terrorizing, killing, and so on. This is indeed a function of negative peer pressure.
Other examples of negative peer pressure include:
Boycotting school for social activities.
Addiction to certain social media applications.
Addiction to gambling.
Pride in attitude and actions.
Constant consciousness of one's image, alongside flashy lifestyle comparison with peers.
Excessive bodily makeup at most times.
Note: Negative peer pressure is more like to be present in people with low self-esteem.
Negative peer pressure should not be encouraged as it leads to a destructive end.

The activities of peer pressure on an individual can be direct or indirect.
In a direct peer pressure, a person may be blackmailed, threatened, dared, confronted, or even enticed. For instance, a student may be pressured into lying, else, he or she is beaten or bulied as a consequence.
Regarding indirect peer pressure, a person may willingly choose to imitate his peers since he enjoys their company and lifestyle. For instance, a boy may choose to become a fraudster even though he isn't threatened towards choosing such path. Rather, he enjoys their lifestyle, and thus choose to become like them.

Social Studies is defined as an integrated study on the interaction of human beings with their physical and social environments.
We can think of our environment as everything that surrounds us at any point in time. For instance, the soil, air, your clothes, phone and everything surrounding you right now are all part of your environment. (That is, they make up your environment).
Physical environment describes every visible thing around us. It could be water, air, soil, clothes, phones or all other things found around us.
Social environment on the other hand describes the various social roles or positions that influence an individual or a group. It is represented in our culture, norms, values, the people and various institutions with whom we interact with. Meanwhile, understand that social media applications like facebook, twitter, instagram, youtube and the likes present a social environment where people can interact with one another regardless their geographical location around the world.
